Description
It is undeniable that the spatial arrangement of buildings and communities reflects and strengthens the nature of gender, race and class relations in society. Different identities perceive the environment in different ways. Based on different values, different genders, roles and social power, relationships between people and space appear differently. As we all know, living place is important to everyone, but most women do not have equal access to it. The true nature of dignity is that everyone needs a place to rest and rejuvenate. During 1960s-1970s, America Feminism movement started arguing the redesign of private space for women version. From 2010s till now, the sound of Asia feminism movement getting stronger, it is also a unique topic to know how Chinese women expecting their own private space. In thesis project, we try to encourage Chinese women from different ages to imagine the environment they need (internal / external / community / relationship / climate / location, etc.) instead of traditional housing or current space.
Artist Statement
The very first idea of this project was inspired by the book called Discrimination of Design written by Leslie Kanes Weisman. It is shocked to be noticed that as a woman, we lived in a society which is full of discrimination that we ourselves could not even realized. The design of spaces, buildings architectures and even our home is full of discrimination. The critic from the book pointed out that, if we live in a society full of inequality, it is impossible to design a real space that could really liberate humanity. We believe it is meaningful to listening to what women emphasize to their private space. We encourage them to fantasize the space they need which don’t need to follow the reality.
