Abstract
Airliner is a casual and exquisite air traffic control game. The player will serve as an air traffic controller and manipulate the aircraft and ground services strategically within a specified time limit while avoiding accidents. Airports around the world provide ground-breaking challenge, different weather and emergencies conditions also enhanced the excitement of the game. Players have to use different strategies to solve the difficulty one by one!
Artist Statement
In the history of the game industry, there not many air traffic control games which targeted on general players. Most of the ATC games such as “Flight Control”, “Air Traffic Controller” series, are presented as realistic graphics and targeted on aviation professionals or aviation enthusiasts. Those games are not friendly to general and core players. Players may need to take a lot of time to learn how to player the game and it is very time consuming. Therefore, we simplified the air traffic control system into a concise and visualizable form, and it created a unique gameplay. Players do not need to have any aviation knowledge to play our game, which is different from the previous ATC games in the market. This is a completion game and the game objectives are to gain starts and reach a higher score. The objectives of our game are introducing air traffic control to general public and satisfy the sense of achievement.
When we are designing the game, we try to make it both challenging and suitable for most of the players. For instance, the airport design increases the chance of collision since most of the flight’s paths will be overlapped each other. Addition manipulation is required to pass those stages. Meanwhile, we encourage players to think out of the box. We arranged a desired gate for each plane so that the player may pull the plane to the expected gate for the bonus mark. However, due to the time constraint and the overlapped path, assigning a closer gate for the plane may be a better decision. As the arrival and the departure flight are fixed, players can try the level again and again to reach a higher score.
Our game visual style is nuanced and realistic with a 2.5D perspective camera, just like our referenced game – “Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening”. We want the aircrafts and the whole environment to appear as little toy figures, or the miniatures of the board games. We added a post-processing blurring effect on the outer edges to enhance the tangible feeling of the game.
