Abstract
This project (ARART) provides a conceptual solution in promoting augmented reality art with a context that deepens the virtual-physical world relationships in terms of mobile app interface design. It starts with a notion between the usage of AR and art, which then follows by the adopted methodology that contributes to the construction of such interface design. The resulted project puts a strong emphasis on visualisation of the conceptual frameworks, and would explore the potential of geo-based AR as a new form of urban interventionists art practices platform.
Description
ARART is a conceptual location-based platform that shapes the cityscape into a public gallery for AR digital arts. With the app, users could discover interactive urban interventionists art among their neighbourhoods and go on an immersive journey filled with sights and sounds.
Artist Statement
Augmented reality (AR) technology is now in the nascent stage and with huge potential growth. It is expected that this technology would become solutions across different industries, including the art and culture sector. Recently, AR technology has started to be adopted in museums. However, the use of it hasn’t gone much beyond the supporting role that provides additional information about the displayed artworks. What if the technology itself can become the another mainstream category of contemporary art? With a platform like ARART, the public has more chances to come across virtual digital arts, which is hard to access in the existing local museums. Not only does the app showcases ranges of new media arts, but also turns the whole city into an enormous gallery. Artworks are no longer constrained to exhibition space, museum opening hours, or physical forms; now they can be seen anywhere, anytime, and even interact with the cityscape to provide a new layer of meaning.
