Abstract
Red is a short animation telling the story of a girl who has eczema. Eczema is a common skin illness in Hong Kong. It captures the stress and situation of one who suffers from such illness.
Description
The story is surrounding a girl with eczema. She feels herself different from others because of the starches and inflamed skin. She cares a lot about the appearance and hides the inflamed skin under the clothes and bandage. The girl has tried many ways to recur and reduce the symptom. Unfortunately, those methods could not cure the symptom.
Every day and night she is suffering under the uncomfortable itchy feeling that makes her feel frustrate and depress. In a moment that she feels powerless and realizes there is no way for her to have the “perfect” skin like others. The girl eventually chooses to let go and recognizes a difference between others and herself.
Artist Statement
The story describes the emotional feeling of the character who has eczema using the medium of 2D animation and abstract visual representation. The key purpose of the project is to record my daily life of having eczema and also letting more people understand the feeling and struggle of having those symptoms.
