Description

This project develops on the films by Yasujiro Ozu and the elasticity of vague language, explore the possibilities of literature and interpersonal relationships. This project uses a code-based video editor to automatically combine different greeting edits, generate pseudo-interactions and relationships between clips which exist for only a few seconds. An implication of this project is to show the ambiguity and flexibility of language which we can use them to create an illusion of the fake Hi-Bye friend relationship between film characters.

In Hi Bye, a different clip of characters greetings has combined automatically by using a code-based video editor. Fake interaction and relationships that only exist for a few seconds and gone when the scene changes. Our brain knows the ambiguity and flexibility of language, so we will develop structuring relationships between film characters involuntarily when they seem to have interaction.

This creates the fake Hi-Bye friend relationship between film characters by using the flexibility of language.

Artist Statement

It is a common thing to saying “Hello” and “Goodbye” with others. They are indifferent, unaffected, and without semantic, just the tools of sending the emotional message. Language has no absolute meaning; it needs to put into a context to be interpreted. This unspeakable elasticity and ambiguous language is the solitude beauty of our spoken words.

The young boy in Good Morning by Ozu thinks greeting is a meaningless thing. But we can build the relationship of Hi-Bye Friend by using greeting only, although it is the fluid and short-lived relationship. In the conversation between Hi-Bye Friend, social lubricant loses their function because they won’t get interaction after greeting. We can say Hi-Bye Friend lets greeting become totally meaningless on semantic and functional in the social lubricant way. However, the greeting has a different function to everyone at the same time, not just social lubricant. People can confirm the relationship, express concern, stabling relationship or feel out something from others from a single “Hi” “Bye”. We can’t precisely understand the meaning under the languages. Specifically, the ambiguity and flexibility of language let the greeting with hidden communicate meaning, and the relationship Hi-Bye-Friend has developed from this.

Yasujirō Ozu is a famous filmmaker for the description of interpersonal and family relationship. In his film, everyone has their social networking, which is fixed. But we can create the new edition of interpersonal relationship with editing video. Having engaged as conversation analysis, the flexible language in linguistics and the film study of Ozu, this work is going to generate the video with combined all the greeting clips from Ozu’s film.

In conversation analysis, the greeting is one of the examples in adjacency pairs. If there were two completely unrelated characters, we cut and spliced their greetings together. Because the first part of the dialogue in the adjacency pairs is related to the second part, our brain will associate those two characters is related automatically. In this way, we can create a fake relationship between the characters through video editing and restructuring the relationships of all characters, let them become hi bye friend to each other.

Programming is the tool of filtering the greeting clips and combining them, and its unpredictable random combinations can create different connections between characters.
