Artist Statement

“Birdwatchers often think of the house sparrow as a little uninteresting, because it is so common,” says Mark Ravinet, a researcher at the Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis (CEES) at the University of Oslo. Although sparrows are small in size and always be ignored, they are the species that lives closest to human. They only lives in area that human lives in, and they adapts to Hong Kong’s life most. However, humans seldom pay attention to them and creates countless negative impacts to their livings, especially under urban development in Hong Kong. Human is not the owner of the city; same to other animals, city is a habitat where human chose to live in. Birds and human are two of the groups formed the society. However, humans seldomly concern and care their feelings, and consider them as part of our city. Human get used to their existence, ignored sparrow are also an animal, like human. Sparrow also have relationships and emotions. This project is an extraction of my experience and time getting along with sparrow, and share my experience and understanding of sparrow in the observation process to the viewers through photographs, hope the viewers can gain knowledge and connection with sparrow and can understand their emotional expressions, thereby generating empathy, embrace another group of small residents of the city, and respect them.
