Description

Regardless of time, medium and venues, the theme of value and attention has been explored by artists. However not many art-piece had been made regarding about cherish time.

There are many quote and movie had mention people usually put the priority of relationship behind and think that it doesn’t matter people will regret if they don’t cherish their time or even spend time with people they loved and care.

Based on the concept of “Time Matter” with the physical computing, I will use eye detection as the main medium and use it to develop an artwork.

The installation will be highlighted on cherish time and the relationship between people. The aims is to provide experience and remind them to cherish every moment.

Artist Statement

I started this idea from a hollywood movie “Click”. This movie is about a workaholic architect finds a universal remote that allows him to fast-forward and rewind to different parts of his life. Complications arise when the remote starts to overrule his choices. In the end of the movie, the main lead regret he has missed lots of life moments because of he choose to skip all the unwanted moments. This movie make me realise that, it is true everyone love to stay at the enjoyable moment and they want to skip the difficult moments. However, life must full of up(s) and down(s).

Time has been researched and explored through many different venues. A lot of artists have expressed their own thought on cherish time with someone. They utilize this theme in their ar, creating a visualize and interactive artpiece.

In recent years there has been lots of chang- es in the way I view on time. I experienced many separate, the most unforgettable one is the morning i lost my grandma, she called me in the previous night and after a sleep, she passed away, through those experience. I realized that the traditional chinese quote “ 珍惜眼前人” which means cherish the people in front of you. This quote is inspiring, I think that not only the one in front of you or the one you can see, but the one you cannot see.

In a movie called “in Time” is about in a near future where no one ages and time is the new currency, a man becomes a suspect when he inherits decades from a wealthy murder victim. This movie inspire me what we can see you may feel it is slow and normal, however when we don’t pay attention to it the time will sneak away. Through this work, I would like to give people a chance to experience and distribute the message of cherish what you have already got otherwise you will loss it unconsciously.

Eye blink detection, through this facial expression detection which is really playful, providing an active participation of visitors, this communication connecting audience and artist made the artwork comes alive.

When the art-piece is ready. Through physical computing, eye detection is one of the feature that is really famous. This technology usually use to give response to audience. When the audience look at the clock, they will see a not working (running) clock, it will look it was freeze. When they first blink their eyes it will trigger the computer program. The program will make the QUARTZ Clock’s minute hand move 1 step clockrise. blink 1 time it will move 1 step, blink 2 times it will move 2 steps etc. If the participant close their eyes, the QUARTZ clock minute hand will move quicker, when detected close eyes 1 second it move one step. When the minute hand moves, it also trigger the computer program and produce a designed clock move sound from the speaker behind. When the audience finished his/ her section. The moments that they have missed will add to the digital clock next to it. This digital clock will show and represent the total missed moments.
