Abstract

Freedom is like the air, only get noticed when being suffocated. This work is a response to the current situation of the level of freedom of Hong Kong. Starting from the past year, Hong Kong citizens are eager to fight for freedom. The user of the respirator can enjoy the scent of freedom which is sprayed inside the plastic bag container. Respirator, which is originally designed for protecting the respiratory system, is transformed into a product with a possibility to cause dyspnea.
自由就像空氣，當你窒息時才覺珍貴。作品是對香港現今享有的自由所作的回應。自上年社運，香港市民一直捍衛自由。戴上豬咀，就能享受膠袋內自由的空氣。原意為保護呼吸系統的豬咀，在作品中變成可能引致窒息的工具。

Artist Statement

Gerald MacCallum’s Singular Concept of Liberty has suggested freedom is always a “triadic relation” in which someone is free from some constraint to do (or not do) something. My work is developed by reviewing the actions of the government in response to the protests. The nature of legal, political and cultural systems is a crucial factor and an important predictor of the volume and quality of protected rights and executed freedoms(Andrei Illarionov – Conditions for Freedom). The scent is being sprayed into the plastic bag container which is connected to the respirator. Freedom is like the air, only get noticed when being suffocated.
