Abstract

Walking through the Goldfish Market, transparent bags of fishes with marked prices are waiting for their potential buyers. Being trapped in an uninhabitable space, the artist realizes the loneliness and the loss of passion towards living. In River Falls, fishes are in the false illusion of swimming freely along the river, yet the true nature of fish is revealed in the film form. The artist questioned whether these living creatures are born to be entertainment, or human dietary needs. Undergoing global issues happening in the past few months, these fishes could be understood as microcosms for human society.

Description

River Falls is an installation art, compiled with art forms of photography,wood-working and sound art. It discovers fishes in different living states. Specifically, their various modes of living are documented by film photography, for instance bags of fishes with prices in the Goldfish Market, and dead fishes in the Fish Market in North Point. The artist integrated reversal films and epoxy resin making to re-create a new river-like living state for these aquatic creatures, who were living under restricted and controlled environments. Besides, the music box triggers the images to move along the river, as if they are swimming freely, which allows the audience to perceive repeated tunes. The images present trapped aquatic lives in bags under an uninhabitable and limited living space, with lack of oxygen and standard water quality, also fishes in the local fish market are about to be dead, about to be subjugated, hanging a halflife.

Artist Statement

The repeated sound portrayed by this project is actually a documentation of films. The reversal films are images of fishes from the Goldfish Street and the local Fish Market, with marked numbers of various prices. These innocent lives are being controlled, entrapped and configured under the stimulation of suppression, immobility and sabotaged freedom.

I integrated reversal films and epoxy resin opus to re-create a new river-like living state for these aquatic creatures. By documenting multiple states of these fishes with reversing films, the music box unleashes them to where they truly belong. The repeated tune triggered by the film imitates the mobility of the fishes. They are in the fallacy of swimming freely along the river-triggered by the mechanics of the music box, yet their true nature of fish is capsulated, preserved and conveyed by the films.
